A. W. Spies, New York City, Percussion Philadelphia Style Derringer Pocket Pistol, .40 Cal, mfg. circa 1850's. Henry Deringer's original Philadelphia pocket pistol became so popular throughout the second quarter of the 19th century that various firms throughout the Eastern US and even England began manufacturing their own versions. This fine example was made in New York City by noted arms retailer A. W. Spies and measures 6 7/8" long overall. The 3 3/8" octagon barrel is fitted with a brass bead front sight and is stamped "SPIES" on the top flat. In typical American fashion there are no additional markings or proofs other than serial number "55" stamped throughout. The metal has a smooth silver/gray appearance with light engraving on the lock and barrel tang. The wood is quite nice retaining an attractive untouched patina with fine checkering around the grip. Engraved silver sideplate, triggerguard, wedge escutcheons, nosecap inlay, and shield wrist nameplate are all bright. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. Clean original nipple is flattened slightly from dry firing. Surprisingly good bore for a pocket gun of this age with deep, sharp six-groove rifling front to back and only mild blackpowder frosting and staining throughout. A scarce early American made Philadelphia derringer in great condition! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
