Description

Civil War Era Model 1851 Austrian "Kammerkarabiner" Percussion Cavalry Carbine, .66 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1850's. Several thousand of these handy little big-bore carbines were imported by both sides during the American Civil War. This example is the less frequently encountered smoothbore variant and was armory converted from flintlock or tube lock to percussion during the 1850's. The barrel measures just 14 1/2" long and features a post/blade front sight with a sighted tang. Overall length of the gun is only 30". The barrel has a toned white finish while the lock and furniture show a smooth rich plum patina. The stock has an attractive untouched appearance with much original varnish remaining and a pleasing blackened patina forming. A neat old homemade brass patchbox has been fitted into the butt which has some interesting embossed designs with later spurious Confederate markings scratched on. Other than the reworked butt and a tiny raised chip behind the barrel tang the wood is very solid with no cracks or damage and very little marring. Original iron buttplate, hammer, trigger, triggerguard, saddle/sling rings & bar, and barrel band. There is no provision for a ramrod. The action is crisp and functions flawlessly. Perfect original nipple. Bright smooth bore looks serviceable with just a few tiny marks and very fine brush scratching throughout. I would say someone cleaned it up not long ago. A nice little gun! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
