Description

Jose Frebino, Plasencia, Spain, Percussion Belt Pistol with Gargoyle Hammer, Hook, & Silver Inlaid Cannon Barrel, .67 cal smoothbore, mfg. 1843. This is a really interesting and unusual big-bore "man stopper" hand made in the historic market town of Plasencia. The pistol measures 11 5/8" long overall and features a 6 1/2" part-octagon barrel which is cannon turned at the muzzle. The top and side flats of the barrel are inlaid in silver with the maker's address and date "En Plasencia / Por Jose Frebino / ano de 1843". The lock is further inscribed "Frebino" with engraving throughout and the metal has a smooth silver/gray patina overall. The stock features a neatly checkered grip and retains an attractively worn untouched finish. Aside from a tight 1" crack at the left forward edge of the stock and a tight old 1/2" crack ahead of the lock with minor edge chipping around the lock the wood has survived in really great condition. The hammer is entirely sculpted in the full form of a sitting gargoyle and the pistol is fitted with a belt hook for carrying. Engraved iron backstrap and buttcap with lanyard ring, sculpted triggerguard and ramrod pipe, brass wedge escutcheons, and original brass tipped wood ramrod. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The nipple is a clean albeit slightly flattened original. A really charming and attractively embellished 19th century Spanish belt pistol! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
